Marriage License and Certificate for Martindale-McKaughan Marriage 1882
When I did a DNA test just for fun, I was more than a little surprised with the results on my father's mother's side. Growing up I had heard rumors that my grandmother "was a Martindale." It didn't mean anything to me. That is, until I got a "DNA great grandfather," Benjamin ("Benj," "Benton," "Ben") Franklin Martindale. My grandmother always kept the "Franklin" as her middle name, and I never understood where that came from until now. He married another woman on October 28, 1886, when my grandmother was 6 weeks old (born October 16, 1886). I've come to have a new appreciation for the lives of women in the frontier days of Texas, which may not be all that different from the lives of many women today.
